Biography

Issam Toualbi is Professor at the Faculty of Law of the University of Algiers 1 and Founding Director of the Unesco Emir Abdelkader Chair for Human Rights and the Culture of Peace. A licensed attorney before the Supreme Court and the Council of State, he holds a Habilitation to Direct Research (2014) and a PhD in Law from Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne (2011), following a Magister in Law from the University of Blida. His academic career includes directing the Research Laboratory on Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law (2018-2021) and heading the Master's programme of the same name at the Faculty of Law of Algiers 1. Author of several books, including Introduction historique au droit musulman and Introduction générale au droit, as well as numerous scientific articles, he has also led several national research projects (CNEPRU, PRFU) on human rights in the Maghreb. A visiting professor at EHESS Paris and the Faculties of Tunis, he is also Editor-in-Chief of the international journal Passerelles and President of the Sidi Abderrahmane al-Thaâlibî Association for Heritage Promotion.
